Pick the rock for what it has to do

Road base and crushed limestone are structural. They lock together under compaction and carry weight, which is what you want under a driveway, a pad, or anywhere equipment runs. Caliche does a similar job and is common here because it is close to source, but it wants proper compaction and it does not like standing water.

River rock and pea gravel do not lock up. They stay loose, which is right for drainage beds, dry creeks, and landscape work, and wrong for anything that carries a vehicle. Rip-rap is a different tool again: broken stone sized to armor a bank or a spillway against moving water, not to drive on. Putting a decorative rock where a structural one belongs is the most expensive mistake in this category, because you pay to buy it, then pay again to remove it.

Spreading and compaction are not optional everywhere

Some loads just need to land in the right place. Fill behind a retaining wall, rock for a drainage bed, material staged for another trade. Others are only worth hauling if they get spread and compacted, because an uncompacted structural base is not a base. Anything that will carry traffic falls in the second group.

Tell us which it is at the estimate and the number changes accordingly. It is one of the few places on a job where you can genuinely take cost out without taking quality out, as long as it is the right place to do it.

What moves the price

Rock type first, since limestone and caliche price differently than river rock or rip-rap. Then total tonnage, whether we source the material or work with what is already on site, whether the load gets spread and compacted or simply delivered, and haul distance from the supplier to your property. Site conditions carry weight too: steep grades, soft ground, and tight access all add time.
