- Q01What does site prep include before a foundation goes in?
- Site prep is everything between raw ground and a build-ready pad: clearing, stripping topsoil, cutting and filling to the engineered elevation, compacting structural fill, and grading drainage away from the pad. Done right, the slab crew rolls straight onto a level, stable surface.
- Q02How do you build a pad on East Texas clay that won't crack a slab?
- Clay is about moisture and compaction. We strip the organics, control the clay's moisture, compact fill in lifts, and proof-roll to spec, then grade drainage so water never sits against the slab. Most slab cracks trace back to a pad that wasn't prepped for shrink-swell clay.
- Q03Do you handle commercial site prep and pad work?
- Yes, residential building pads and commercial sites both, including the engineered compaction, grade tolerances, and stormwater controls regulated markets like Tyler require. We plan the paperwork and the dirt together.
- Q04Is drainage part of site prep or a separate job?
- It's part of it. We grade positive fall away from the pad as we build it, because retrofitting drainage after the slab is poured costs far more. On clay especially, the pad and the drainage get planned as one job.
- Q05How much does site prep or a building pad cost?
- Site prep is priced by the cut-and-fill volume, how much clearing and topsoil stripping comes first, the soil, and the compaction and drainage the build requires. A flat, dry lot is one number; a wooded or wet site needing demucking and imported fill is another. We quote after a site walk, never by phone.
- Q06How long does it take to prep a building pad?
- A typical residential pad takes one to three days to clear, cut, fill, compact, and grade; larger commercial sites run longer with engineered compaction and testing. Wet clay that needs moisture conditioning or demucking adds time. We coordinate the schedule with your slab crew so the pad is ready when they are.
- Q07What's the difference between site prep and excavation?
- Excavation is moving dirt, digging, trenching, and hauling. Site prep is the full sequence that makes raw ground build-ready: clearing, stripping, cut and fill, compaction, and drainage to an engineered elevation. Excavation is one part of site prep; the pad, the moisture control, and the grading around it are the rest.
- Q08Do you handle drainage and erosion control during site prep?
- Yes. We grade positive fall away from the pad as we build it and install the erosion controls the site triggers, silt fence, stabilized entrances, and seeding, keeping them up until the build takes over. On clay especially, the pad and its drainage are planned as one job, not bolted on afterward.
