Erosion Blanket
also called: erosion control blanket, ECB
Biodegradable mat pinned to a slope to hold seed, soil, and moisture in place while vegetation establishes.
Erosion blankets are rolls of straw, wood fiber, or coconut fiber held together by netting, laid over a freshly seeded slope and pinned with staples. The blanket holds the seed and soil in place during the first few rains, retains moisture for germination, and biodegrades as the new vegetation takes over the job of holding the slope.
Slope ratio drives the blanket choice: shorter-fiber straw blankets work on slopes flatter than 3:1, more durable coconut fiber blankets are required on steeper slopes or where higher flow velocities are expected.
On East Texas clay slopes that have been cut bare during construction, blankets are almost mandatory in spring or fall when seeding is happening. Skip them and the first thunderstorm washes the seed and the topsoil into the next watershed.
